Future neonatal nurses?

“Living” in the NICU gives me a lot of quality time with the nurses. It’s interesting what topics come up for discussion. A week and a half ago, the girls’ umbilical cords (or what was left of them) fell off.

Here is how the conversation went:

Özlem: “Do you want it? Do Americans have a special tradition?

Me: "Well, I’ve never heard of Americans doing anything special with the umbilical cords."

Özlem: “Well, what do you want Natalie and Sophie to be when they grow up?

Me: “Whatever they want to be. Why are you asking?

Özlem: “I’m sure you have something in mind. If you want your daughters to be doctors, for example, you need to drop the umbilical cord stump into a doctor’s pocket. But you can’t let them know that you did it.

Me: “Özlem, don’t be alarmed if you find a little surprise in your pocket.
